Sze Daddy hot sauce is a project created by 886 restaurant. The name is inspired by the iconic Chinese hot sauce “Laoganma” which means old godmother. The design highlights the home-made nature of this Taiwanese hand bottled chili oil while having a modern and pop style. We created this realist comic style illustration of the creator Eric Sze and incorporated all kinds of vintage Asian elements. We wanted to find a balance between creating a intricate design and coming up with a visual that does not take itself too seriously.
After a few rounds of revision on the poses, we landed on Eric holding a traditional Chinese knot with hot peppers knitted into it with his other hand making a heart shaped motion. The flowers on the design was from a vintage poster that we treated with a modern polo dots technique.
