放鞭炮， as part of the celebration ritual, we always lit up firecrackers. In the folktale, there’s a monster 年 that comes out on New Year’s Eve. Monster 年 is scared of red color and sound. People light up firecrackers and fireworks wishing the sound will scare the monster away and also drive the bad luck away.
